Each festival has its own symbols associated with it and its no exception for Christmas. Probably the most well known symbol or item associated with Christmas is undeniable the Christmas tree. Most of us put on the Christmas tree to symbolize the holiday season, or the Advent season though not many of us know the origins, history or reasons connected to the tree and the Christmas tree décor.

Historically, the Christmas tree tradition is credited to the Germans who were devout Christians who brought the decorated trees into their homes. The trees that were normally used were fig trees that were connected to the Holy Trinity-the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. One popular belief is that the 16th century Protestant reformer- Martin Luther King was the first to add candles to a tree, being inspired by the brilliance of stars twinkling amidst evergreen trees while walking home on a winter evening.
In America, Christmas tree décor brought by the Pennsylvania German settlements were seen as pagan symbols and not accepted. Like many other Christmas customs, the Christmas tree was adopted much later in America. In 1846, Queen Victoria and her German Prince, Albert were shown sketched in the Illustrated London News standing around a Christmas tree with their children. Being a popular royal among her nation and her subjects, the Christmas tree décor quickly became popular and fashionable in Britain as well as the fashion-conscious East Coast American Society. The marked the arrival of the Christmas tree to America.
